COSHH Assessments

Understanding your responsibilities as an employer

The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH) require employers to assess and control exposure to substances that may cause harm in the workplace.

Hazardous substances can include dusts, fumes, gases, vapours, liquids, chemicals and biological agents. Exposure may affect the skin, eyes or respiratory system and, depending on the substance, can result in both immediate and long-term health effects.

Employers must identify hazardous substances, assess the risks, introduce suitable control measures and ensure those controls are properly maintained and used. Appropriate information, instruction and training must also be provided, together with health surveillance or emergency arrangements where required.

Certain hazards, including asbestos, lead and radioactive substances, are subject to separate legislation and are not principally controlled under COSHH.

When is a COSHH assessment required?

A COSHH assessment is required where employees or others may be exposed to substances hazardous to health during work activities. This can include chemicals, dusts, fumes, vapours, gases, biological agents and other hazardous substances. The assessment should consider how exposure may occur, who may be affected and what controls are required to prevent or adequately control that exposure.
