Face Fit Testing
Wooltown Safety Services provides qualitative face fit testing at your workplace or site for disposable filtering facepieces (FFP masks) and reusable half-mask respirators.
Fit testing is required where tight-fitting Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) is used to protect workers from hazardous dusts, fumes, fibres or other airborne contaminants. Because face shape and size vary between individuals, the same make or model of respirator will not provide an adequate seal for every wearer.
Before testing, workers are given guidance on the correct use of RPE, the importance of achieving an effective face seal and what to expect during the test. Following successful completion, appropriate test records and certification are provided.
Types of face fit testing offered:
Qualitative Testing for filtering face-pieces (FFPs, disposable masks) and half masks.
Qualitative Face Fit Testing assesses the seal quality of disposable half-masks and can also be applied to fit tests for reusable half mask respirators. It relies on the wearer’s sense of taste to evaluate the mask’s effectiveness.

On-site testing Service
Qualitative face fit testing uses a controlled taste-test method to determine whether the selected respirator provides an adequate seal to the wearer’s face.
Wooltown Safety Services can provide testing for individuals or groups, together with advice on mask suitability and correct use.
Typical booking options include:
- Half day – up to 7 people
- Full day – up to 14 people
- Testing available at your premises or site
- Face fit test records and certification provided
Workers should attend clean shaven in the area where the respirator seals against the face, as facial hair can prevent tight-fitting RPE from providing an effective seal.
